I'm not sure why its so amazing that particles of matter can move like waves, water is matter and it moves in waves. However that doesn't explain why it would move in waves when being shot one at a time. 5'd for blowing my mind.

I find your theory highly improbable, but at the same time, funny probable, and possible. To sum it up, this side... is an electron!

I like all the people who say, oh this is just Wave / Particle Duality. That's really old. It's already been explained. NO. This experiment is still amazing in the mind warping way it destroys any attempts at trying to visualize matter / energy. The photoelectric effect shows that photons act like particles, yet we saw here that they also act like waves. Even when a single particle is being shot it acts like a wave. That's messed up. And while probability is a nice, it's a tool, not an answer.

you fail for making a school knowledge ytmnd and not understanding it :) it works of course with a single slit as well. if you're cool: try to understand the experiment and make another "educational ytmnd" and measure the distance between two neighbouring tracks

FTL. I doubt there are perfect vacuums free from anything. There are probably things that we don't even know of or comprehend that are interfering with the electron's path. There's probably more to life than electrons, protons, neutrons, and waves, but we just can't detect it with our five senses.

Wow, way to completely dismiss years of scientific research.

i agree.
May 10th, 2007
(0)
years of scientific research in the middle ages 'proved' the earth was flat, and that the sun orbited it. Just because it's research doesn't mean it's right. Science is always open to criticism and really any theory that makes sense. There are several scientists who believe in the theories he proposed, and they're quite possible. Don't assume something's true just because some f*ggy aggie told you so. Always be critical: the first rule of science.

I don't think that's crazy. That's probably because I'm studying a degree in physics though. HAH. What's really interesting is Pauli exclusion principle - it's what keeps neutron stars together, don't you know.

Normally I'm against seeing this kind of stuff on YTMND, so I'm giving a 1 - this site isn't for such info, and it's not your own. But I genuinely find this topic interesting and the site was presented well. Basically I enjoyed it, but on a YTMND level, it's not suitable. So I'm split at a 3. I suppose you'll be delving into the Quantum Immortality theory next?

I'm not quite sure about what we know about quantum mechanics yet, but I do like how you explained this phenomenon. I very much like the idea of an electron being in two places at one time, although it's a bit counterintuitive, eh? Perhaps though it is true that, romantically, when we touch our electrons each other, we breathe the same air and are each other, eat of the same molecules that once composed the great people of the past and we have participated in molecules that will be the great people of the f

there may be more than one universe! unlikely but would be cool if it were true. atoms appear then disappear all the time. just a thought
May 10th, 2007

How can one electron enter two slits at the same time? I just can't grasp that concept.
May 10th, 2007
(0)
It's because it has wave-like properties that allow it to spread out, thus it can go through both at the same time.
May 11th, 2007
(0)
Even still, how do electrons spread out? even so much so that it goes though two slits?

im looking forward to not watching this again i dont want a science lesson on a web site that it supposed to make me laugh
(0)
Thanks...i feel like im in high school all over again. Anyway the explanation for the experiment with firing one electron at a time is utterly retarded and just an attempt for scientists to explain what they don't understand. Not to say I understand why they work like that..but i mean come on, If that were true it would contradict all we know about particles and wave particles in a time binded universe.
May 10th, 2007

Hopefully the next double slit experiment to do, is on your wrists. ur moms a double slit experiment lol

I'm sure this point has been made but: Lasers are light, generated radiatively by an excited atom source (like a ruby) and emitted as a coherent stream (all the photons travel the same direction, making the beam incredibly intense for very little energy). Lasers can also be plane polarized light where the constructive interference increases the amplitude, which in light is equal to its intensity, so once more you generate a very intense point of light for very little energy.

not sure if anyone else pointed this out but yeah light does get diffracted in a single slit. It's been cleverly named "single-slit diffraction". But other than that, good job.
August 27th, 2008
(0)
I have a question, if the electrons being fired one at a time are supposed to be in multiple places at once as you stated, why do they only hit the paper in one spot?
August 27th, 2008
(0)
Because they are being detected. As pointed out all through these YTMND's, once detected, they only can be in one place. They can only exist in multiple places at once when there is no way to know exactly where they are.

Man, I don't want to be a buzzkill but a flashlight will not work for this experiment like you stated in the beginning. You do need a single wavelength, like you mentioned later in the presentation. You need to fix the beginning as to not confuse people even more.

Aww, ytmnd doesn't support those characters? :(
November 13th, 2009

Maybe this goes over the heads of the uneducated masses of ytmnd regulars, but I can't see voting any higher for a site that spits out popular pseudo-science tripe and then takes the typical "go google it" cop-out on the difficult part. Nothing is technically incorrect about this, but there's so much unwarranted speculation and hand-waving and that it would make Michael Crichton blush in his grave.

Ah man, an oldie but a goodie. I still haven't found a better intro to quantum mechanics than this series. I'd highly encourage you to put a youtube version of this for more modern audiences; it's too useful a teaching tool not to be introduced to a new generation.
