You really did not prove anything. Non-intellegence doesnt just transform into intellegence but that does not mean it is created by intellegence. Have you ever heard of string theory? Your analogy of "rocks writing research papers" an invalid arguement because The "Rocks" were at one point just rocks (pertaining to our Earth) without life. However natural (un-intellegent) reactions occured which changed the composition of those rocks over time and they eventually developed into the primordial soup

No. Two possibilities: 1) God exists and still watches over and intervenes, meaning he is evil god who allows atrovities such as genocide to occur. 2) God created the universe and then left, meaning ANYTHING could have created the universe because all that was required was the beginning of a chain reaction (this also means that I will go unpunished for suggesting point #1).

keep in mind that im 3'ing you for a few reasons. first, this is a decent ytmnd and you had some nice effects. two, connery graphic. three, i think your argument is flawed due to a lack of understanding on the part of humankind. clearly, theories of causality and modern quantum theory simply dont complement one another. someone f*cked up, but it wasnt you. my head asplode.

Also, your answer to the "who created God?" question is ridiculous. You can't try yo use science to back up your claim if you are just going to ignore that same science when it comes back to bite you in the ass.

This is alot of assuming. Who knows maybe all the stone and earth in the universe was once all one planet. Maybe the Universe was caused by a Scientist in a lab but mixed the wrong materials together and created the biggest explosion that had ever happened that blew up the planet and made the closest source of light (their sun) to implode and spread all the earth around this newly created Universe. sounds stupid and lacking evedince... right. well that's kindof how i look at your theory.

Who cares if God exists? God is either completely oblivious to our existence, or a complete dick. Take your pick. Just accept this fact and move on with your life: The Universe is completely indifferent to our existence. If God exists, your tiny brain couldn't possibly understand or comprehend what He/It was, much less determine His/Its "plan". Leave it to Humans to create a God that looks, talks, and behaves just like Humans look, talk, and behave. Pitiful.

Nice but one problem: you can't explain God to nonbelievers. Why? 1 Cor 1:17-25 Bascially, wise words won't change hearts, only the "foolishness" of the preaching of the cross of Christ. For believers, verse 17 has impact: "For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of no effect." I liked it though. (The 1st Cause made me think of a Triforce, haha)

3'd for the indepth analysis. However, according to one theory of String theory, the Universe has always existed in on interdimensional form or another. The beginning of our universe was, according to this theory, caused by a collision between the boundaries between string layers at a sub-subatomic (I mean smaller than quarks) level.

You're argument is basically that of St. Thomas Aquinas with the concept of the "Prime Mover" saying that at one point there was nothing and then there was something. Plato had an idea about this too, that he called "Ex Nihlo" (Out of Nothing) so the idea has been around for a while. In summation the idea of "God" as an old man with a beard doesn't really do it for me but what the "Prime Mover" theory does is it gives the idea of an unknowable force. Key word being, or course, unknowable.

Sorry friend, but all you've managed to state is that the creation of the universe has a cause, not that the cause is god. Just because you do not know the cause doesn't prove that it's god, merely that we don't know the cause. If I put a pie out on my window to cool and come back two hours later and the pie is gone, I don't call the police using the absence of the pie as definitive proof that you, Paladin, have stolen it. There are literally billions of other lifeforms which may have taken my pie.

I commend you, sir. I remain an ardent atheist, but this ytmnd shows a lucidity and excellent quality not found in others. It is folly simply to write off an argument based on logic simply due to pre-existing biases; it is in my nature to keep a regular equilibrium of healthy skepticism and benefit of the doubt. Theists are stupid; good men can disagree. Also, I liked the music.

Well put together, sources all cited properly. Music is appropriate, you were able to keep my attention. I disagree with you though. You avoid a very good question, "What 'caused' god?" You write it off as "First Cause" and call the question "ignorant", but really, if EVERYTHING must have a cause, then what caused god? And to create intelligence you don't need intelligence, I don't see this supported by anything you've stated in this YTMND...to create "X", you do not require "X". Still well done, 5'd

Kudos to some of you for keeping up intelligent debate, but no kudos for those of you who whip out the 'big bang' without knowing anything about it. The possibility of the big bang leading to our evolution to have occurred is roughly around the same possibility (has been documented by numbers, but I don't have it pasted to my wall atm) as being blindfolded and put into a bathtub the size of our solar system (more or less), filled with blue marbles, 1 red marble, picking red 1st try.

This on the other hand is an excellent YTMND and argument. Personally I would've also used Newton's 2nd Law of Thermodynamics as well as the fact that science is just as faith-dependant as religion. Ultimately, it's all faith and faith is a crazy, powerful force. While I disagree with the concept behind religious YTMNDs, you clearly have a lot of faith and I admire you a lot for having the guts to do this.

One of the best thought arguments for the case, which is a nice change. I agree that you have made a case, but it still leaves a very important question: if God was required to start the universe, why was there nothing required to begin God? This goes against the causality rule you mentioned. If God can exist without a prior cause, then couldn't the universe exist without a prior cause? Both religion and science have paradoxes, I'm sure no one will ever completely understand either of them.

while well done, I can't help but agree with all the people who bash this proposal of tangible logic. This is too sensitive of a topic to be awash with quick bouts of banter and leaps of faith in logic. While I do have personal views about what dictates a God head or mentality, I must say that this is a pathetic attempt to justify any sense of rational conclusion. Oh well, americans depend on stagnation to thrive, so be it to be reflected throughout each individual's expression....

This is a BIG TIME critical thinking fallacy. It is INVALID. Let's examine: 1. Everything that comes to be has a cause. 2. The universe came to be. Therefore 3. Something caused the universe. Therefore 4. God caused the universe. See how it doesn't follow? 3. follows from 1 and 2, but there is nothing saying that this cause of the universe is the only thing existing. There could be 5 things that join together to cause the universe. Polytheism, sweet! Critical thinking, PHIL 120. Fallacy of EVERY

Causality is not a way to define the beginning of the universe. Your list items do not relate as well as you assume they do, thus falsifying your thesis for premise 2. If the beginning of the universe was the beginning or everything, then there could not be some omnipotent being there to cause it to happen. The beginning of the universe was the original cause of everything.

It was entertaining to me and informative as for this: "many of your arguments are based on theories" Aren't most of the things we learn in scinece class theroies? Yet they are presented to us as fact. The fact of the matter is that we are only human and can not determine the origin of the universe so ANY argument stating that A is wrong because it is a theory would mean that ALL beliefs whether scinetifc or religous in nature are wrong due to the fact that they can't be proven entirely.
September 8th, 2006
(0)
As a personal opinion, I believe that the Bible is nothing but a book of moral codes and fairy tales. And the idea of God is just that: an idea. God did not create humans, but humans created God in their minds. The whole problem with proving God's existence is that the intellectuals who believe He exists only work towards finding counterexamples that defeat anything that naysayers of God have claimed, they don't actually provide any REAL proof. And the naysayers still sit around waiting for proof.

Two stars - while logically flawed, cot particularly condescending, and technically well done. Unfortunately - even if you're right, nothing whatsoever says the first cause has to be the Judeo-Christian God. It could be any god - or maybe an intelligent entity that created the universe, and only that, and is now gone. You're rather worse off than where you started, I think.

I doubt anyone will read this, but I think that the only reason why the creation of the universe is a matter of debate is because humans are unable and therefore unwilling to comprehend infinity. Perhaps the universe simply exists, and always has; continually expanding and retracting, as it transfers matter and energy around.
September 8th, 2006

i'm giving this 5 stars...but only because it actually encouraged me to say something. i consider myself an agnostic, and needless to say i didn't find any of your arguments convincing. it's not because i don't want to believe in god or because i'm a dick. it's just that all of your arguments are based on deductive logic. even if all your premises were true, the conclusions that you draw from them do not necessarily follow. also, you should probably leave physics out of any argument for the existence of god

I have no reason to believe it will happen and logic (not to mention common sense) seems to contravene it. Are you honestly suggesting that simply disbelieving in deities would be such a cripple in wisdom? That a deity would be THAT obsessed with what humans believe and not how they act?

"I only had enough space in the YTMND to show that God exists - without going really indepth into WHICH God exists and what exactly His properties are. So yes, the goal of this YTMND was ONLY to prove that a God exists." Your logic proves that the universe began, but doesn't prove WHAT caused the universe to begin. It could have been God / a god, or maybe it was something completely different. You can't prove that it was God who created the universe, OR that a conscious, thinking entity did it.

here's one I heard awhile back: "Maybe you hate the idea of a God because you can't wrap your brain around the fact there may be *other* scientific laws you have yet to find that would explain "what is" and "what isn't". btw, 5'd.

Can't you see that none of this even matters, because we're using a primitive language to communicate these ideas? We're limited by words and the concepts they define. It's as simple as that. It just doesn't work, end of story.

Whoa. Really dig the clean format and music. I really love your argument and I appreciate how rock-solid it is. Bulletproof logic. However, I've got to disagree with you inasmuch as you set up a pluralistic view of the universe. I don't think that there are Platonic 'forms'; you cite beauty, intelligence, and complexity. Ockham's Razor would argue that a less complex thesis is more likely to be correct, as there is less that has to be established, justified, etc.

And aside from metaphysical arguments, there is no empirical evidence which would prove the existence of a second nature of Things which would therefore state that there absolutely, positively, must be a Cause for every Event. We only know, really, what we've observed. While the concept of something infinite is absurd, the concept of something with a finite yet extremely massive body with a supernatural plane governing it is equally absurd. 5'ed for great justice.
September 8th, 2006
(0)
OK, so the universe can't be infinite. Fine. But God is infinite. What? Lame. Haven't you heard of the Big Bang? Sounds like a first cause to me, and has more evidence than a supreme being (who is apparently a man named God). Also, who the hell said intelligence can't come from non-intelligence, and life can't come from non-life. It happened here on Earth, Mr. Genius. Evolution. (Oh no! Crazy Christian Kryptonite!) reading the crappy one-star votes, i've come to the realization that most people will go as far as they can to deny the existance of God, even make retarded arguements that make them look like total morons. this is really well done, clearly you know your stuff. people, when you try to create a YTMND against this, use some logic and reasoning, like this guy did, instead of "DUR, GOD AM IMPOSIBUL"
September 8th, 2006
(0)
JGold, how could you be so retarded as to call the "big bang" a first cause? i mean, what caused that? hmm? and what caused what caused that? and what... and so forth.
September 8th, 2006
(0)
Although this is a very nice presentation and I can see you put alot of work into it, the fact is you have proved nothing. You cannot use logic or science to prove the existance of god. I actually have more respect for religious people that claim a belief in god should be based on faith rather than some supposed proof that they don't have. The fact is no one knows, but if you choose to employ the scientific method to proove an existance of god you are going to be very dissapointed...
September 8th, 2006
(0)
...What you have actually done here is create a false dilemma in which you state that since the universe has a cause, and since we don't know what it is, then it must be god. This logical fallacy is where you cross the line from "proof that god exists" to "my faith that god exists". Basically you are starting out with a conclusion, and trying to draw out supporting facts while dismissing ones that don't support your conclusion...
September 8th, 2006

oh, and i just read the last part of your comment, JGold. occams razor? it'd seem that using that rule we'd come to the conclusion that you're a moron.....

Awful. I sincerely hope this was done in jest. 1. You do not even touch on the plethora of theories which explain the creation of the universe, without relying on the "supernatural." 2. "Life cannot come from non-life." This statement is blatantly untrue. Unless perhaps you do not believe in evolution. However, this ytmnd was evidently created with the intent to appear rigorously scientific... so presumably you do believe in evolution, and merely put this statement in to strengthen an already faulty pr

A question, do you believe in unicorns? fairies? leperchauns? If not, then why not? There is no more proof of their existance than that of a god. This is exactly where Occam's razor comes into play as JGold was refering to. "Plurality should not be posited without necessity" or to quote Aquinas "nature does not employ two instruments where one suffices". So why should it be any different with god?
September 8th, 2006

Yo, try this one. Could God create a stone even He cannot life? Use this analogy: J.R.R. Tolkien created a fictional world. Now, first we must establish that he exists outside this world of Middle Earth. He is omnipotent; anything within the world as we (the inhabitants of Middle Earth, in this case) know it he has power over -- the laws of physics, magic rings, everything. One day, he created an enormous boulder. It is gigantic; it is so huge that it is unliftable.

Chichiri: KCA. Yawn.___ Very much so
September 8th, 2006

That same day, he writes himself into the story. He comes across the boulder and, lo and behold, he cannot lift it. But can the Tolkien who exists outside the story not merely move the boulder or cause it to be lifted? I'm not intentionally trying to make an arguement for the Christian God (though I am Roman Catholic), but the multiple natures of God (body, soul, and spirit) give the ability to do things otherwise impossible.

A truly pathetic (lack of) an argument. Sad how this discussion became about God and religion when the original focus was on science and logic. Twisting words and changing meaning is nothing new. To say, as you did, Max, "anyone with half a brain could pick apart in 15 seconds" is untrue, judging from the obvious discussion this has fostered. Maybe you should read Behe, Newton, Ben Stein or other members of the intelligentsia that would disagree with you.

THAT is utter BS. which is easier to believe, that a supreme omni-everything being created life, or that microbes magically appeared on rocks, then evolved into you.” your semantic interpretation of my usage of the word "evolution" is saddening. It is quite obvious that I meant the theory of evolution, rather than any general change over period of time. You are obviously unfamiliar with the theory of evolution, seeing as you attribute it to “magic.” I do not believe that god necessarily does not exist. However, it irks me to n

The thing you describe is not god. It is something that started us living here. It could be a piece of bacteria from another planet. The fact that people that believe in "god" is funny because they think they know everything there is to know about the "uni"verse. Where you actually have no proof of. Therefore your "god" does not exist. You have to define god before you tell people what "god" is. Try again buddy.

******My Opinion On the Matter****** Well, to put it bluntly your theories fall flat. For one thing, your own citing of Causality brings up the flaw that God cannot have come from nothing. You may argue, but God isn't in our universe, our physical laws. Well, then he's not here, because he doesn't exist in this universe and thus how could he influence something that he does not exist in? Can you drive someone else's car without being able to know anything about it or to be in any kind of sensory contact with it? Any laws that he has in his own world cannot change those here, humans cannot alter laws of physics, nothing can (apart from Black Hole singularities perhaps).

You cant just assume that because reality needs a reason to be, otherwise it wouldn't, that automatically manmade religions are true. because their is nothing to back such an assumption up, it is a guess based on nothing but human writings and stories. the fact that those writings will always have the possibility of being false as long as no gods show up, or an event occurs that proves them undeniably true, makes it meaningless to choose a religion as the answer to the mystery of being. religion is for people who are too weak to go on without support in their lives, and people too afraid to stare the truth in the eye, which is that the truth about existence is unknown.

i'm with max on this one. keyword, theories. i'm sorry, but I will not take someone's "proof" as truth, even if it is hawking. this ytmnd failed from the beginning, your logic is flawed, and you've probably got a lot of people steamed up, not only because they disagree with you, but because you just think you are so......f*cking......right. and to tell everyone at the end your expectations of having rebuttals, just iced the cake. YEAH, people are gonna talk back, and by you saying they will doesn't make you any more defendable. i'm glad you have your beliefs, and are strong in them, because that's the IDEA of belief itself, but what are you trying to do here? honestly? what was the purpose of this. spiral out, man.

******* CONTINUATION ****** Also, intellect must have derived from non-intellect at one point or another. Avanced primates have memories, have been taught to speak sign language (Koko the gorilla for example), and they communicate to humans memories.. emotions. Intellect is NOT UNIQUE TO THE HUMAN RACE. We are just lucky as all f*ck to have a body that we can use to do all sorts of things it wasn't intended for. Do you think my fingers, the product of billions of years of tiny altercations from generation to generation, were made to type on these keys? No. A human being is the apparently highest form of intellect in addition to the most useful body to go with it.

***** CONTINUATION AGAIN ***** There is indesputable proof of animals that looked suspiciously like humans millions of years ago but were not the species we are today. Our ancestors. The "intellect" whetstone speaks of was a gradual natural occurence. We humans are so naive to think that we came about so quickly. We are the pinnacle of modern evolution, the product of over 4 BILLLION years of life that naturally gets better in every way as the variants by chance recieve abilities that help them survive... come about. In far old school billions of year old roots, we all stemmed from bacteria. They're alive. But can they write a college paper? No. Can a primate write a college paper? No. This YTMND gives no conclusive evidence to the existence of a God.

long summary short, it is impossible to prove or disprove a God. If you claim God isn't bound by our laws of physics and can't be interacted with or influenced by us (who adhere to physical laws)... that means GOD ISN'T HERE TO BEGIN WITH. You just shot down your own argument by saying he's in some supernatural place... well then admit it, God's not in this universe by what you said. Which means he is not here or detectable by any human knowledge. So, he might as well not even exist... if he is there, we don't know and he sure as f*ck isn't doing anything like he did in the Bible to clarify the facts of life. Why the f*ck is that anyway? Why the f*ck aren't there any more Moses' or Jesus'? What happened to all that supposed fearful power? Bullsh*t.

You fail... -_- (and by that I mean, you fail in proving your thesis, and the cosmological argument has been rebuffed by philosophers the world over for proving the existance of God since Sir Thomas Aquinas first proposed it - and, of course, he was not the first to do so, as Plato and Aristotle both used the cosmological argument to produce the same reasoning - before Western civilization even had a concept of monotheism! - besides, the causality argument requires God to have a cause.)

please justify the following: "Intelligence cannot come from non-intelligence". The theory of evolution postulates one mechanism by which intelligence might emerge. Note: Objections to this that appeal to ill-defined concepts like "complexity" are flawed, as are applications of 'ex nihilo nihil fit' - the Mandelbrot set is one example of infinite detail and complexity arising from a completely dull iterative function.

Also, the notion "The universe came to be" is a little shaky as well. The second law of thermodynamics is a statistical law, rather than an absolute - and so deviation from it can be explained away by the anthropic principle, if you want to play it that way. Oscillating-universe models don't appear to violate any physical laws either, incidentally.

You realize that without facts and doing things through reasoning alone you can also make fiction into fact? Why just look at alchemy and see where that went. Also "non-intellegence cannot create intellegence" is a faulty argument. You're just showing us a view, not fact nor inductive or deductive reasoning. And in the end, it doesnt effect anything in reality anyway. Are you trying to convert us or somthing? Or just trying to self fufill your own thoughts and feelings?

If it can be argued that .999~ = 1. Then could we all accept that the "big bang" has actually been going on for an infinite ammount of time? It has already been proven that the universe is expanding and contracting, just currently it is expanding more then it contracts, so it grows, eventually the universe will reach its limit of expansion and begin to collapse in on itself, like a supernova. Before reaching the focal point and exploding outward again, in an cycle that has been going on an infinite ammount of times, and will continue for an infinite amount of time.

"God" was brought into being at a time when people only knew about the continent they lived on, they did not know about space, the earth was flat, the Earth was the center of the universe. "God" has taken the place of this ifinity, it has brought meaning to what people could not understand. The argument about .999~ = 1 is that it will eventually stop, which it doesn't, it goes on for an infinite length, just like how the universe has been expanding and contracting for an infinite ammount of time. "Infinite" is hard to grasp, so God takes its place. So god does exist, but its existance is just a placeholder for the infinite amount of time, not some supernatural being.

5 for effort. -1 for length. -1 for sucky music. -2 for dishonest bullsh*t. Let's go over this, shall we? You are right in saying that the universe, as we know it, had a beginning. This is consistent with observational evidence. What caused this beginning? We don't know yet. Key word: 'We'. Meaning you don't know either. Just saying 'Goddidit' and leaving it at that makes you the same as ancient people who thought lightning was created by Zeus instead of actually investigating the phenomenon and finding the real answer.

I'm giving you a 4 for effort, but understand hat I'm not convinced. I believe Max had it best, and worded what I was planning to say far better than I could have. Since the dawn of civilization, mankind came up with God(s) for the purpose of not feeling to insignificant and lonely in the world, and to explain what could not yet be explained. This is still being done today, albeit lost much steam as more and more things are come to be scientifically understood. As Max pointed out, a few hundred years ago, people knew the earth was flat and the center of the universe, and 40 years ago, landing on the moon was a monumental achievement, in fact it still is kind of a big deal. Continued...

Okay ... getting a bit more serious. I'm not going to attempt to refute this argument, just show that it isn't as iron-clad as whetstone believes. I hope however, that I am speaking to people interested in science and not religion. If you're more interested in belief than in figuring out the mechanisms behind the universe, your attempt to categorize and bound God into some finite logical set is doomed.
September 8th, 2006

What you have shown is not proof of any God, merely possibility. "Why God Exists" is a very misleading title. You also fail to mention anything about the possibility of no causality in the universe. Since this "first cause" had no cause, what's to say that the rest of the universe had no cause? Certainly, observable relationships occur throughout the universe: winning is related to training, nuclear explosions are related to atomic bombs, NEDM is related to the initial site. However, nothing necessarily needs to be caused; so long as the universe has non-infinite portions, each point in time-space or piece of matter does not need to move independently. Instead, it can move as one, sort of like a giant calculation slowly figuring itself out all at once.

Cont.- Are we to really so full of ourselves that we beleive we should know everything about how the universe works and such? I think not, hell, I believe that as of now, the human brain isn't even capable of comprehending such things. So many people go back to the beginning and say "God did it". Sometime in the future, assuming we survive that long, I think that the human race will be able to understand such things, and an answer will be found. I'm going to sound rude here, and I don't want to, but it sums up how I feel sometimes. I don't want to place all unknown forces in this huge universe simply as the unexplainable actions of an invisible space wizard. I know that came out harsh, but thats how it often looks.
September 8th, 2006

In addition, your claim that Stephen Hawking found that universe had a beginning is misleading, and you improperly interpret it in your argument. If you read his theories, he states that the universe "began" only in the sense that it exploded outward from a singularity, where the laws of physics (allegedly) break down, and that a "universe" cycle has been happening for an indefinite and unknowable amount of time. This singularity, supposedly having broken down laws of physics, is not delegated to have a cause, and it does not need one if we assume Hawking's theories are correct.
September 8th, 2006
(0)
You do realize time is an invention of man. It never really existed until we created a system to determine "time". It can't really play such a huge role if time applies merely to planets with intelligent life who have created such a thing.

I'd like to start by casting some serious doubt on the entire premise of Whetstone's argument: Causality. Since its creation, quantum physics has shown that the universe isn't this mechanical, deterministic space-boat. To quote Soderberg in the film Waking Life: "It's Loose." The argument itself hint that there was activity going on before space and time mattered. Trying to explain the nature of that activity depends on alot of speculation. Is the motion of a shadow caused by the object casting the shadow, or by the position of the sun and the act of motion?
September 8th, 2006
(0)
Quantum Mechanics shows that on a sub-atomic level, causality is not a useful thing to describe sub-atomic phenomena. And with things like multiverse and loophole theories, there is simply too much being ignored to go any further. If you want to believe God created the universe, okay. But if you want to figure out how he did so, don't cling to a set our outdated theories.

I for one, believe that God is an Immortal Alien. If you believe that heaven is not on earth, or that god lives "above", you cannot ignore the truth that God is an extra-terrestrial. 2000 years ago, he realized that, being a little green man, he cannot win in a ground war against us. Instead, he is performing Psyops - convince a few of us that he is Omniscient and then he is free to rule from the shadows. God, with the help of Donald Rumsfeld and Jesus, is the ultimate Sith Lord.

Yes, you are right, current scientific evidence shows that the Universe was created through some sort of cosmic event, however there is no scientific evidence that what created it is a seperate entity (which is what you've assumed here). You can't prove God exists with science, all you accomplished here is fail.
