The first time it loaded in fox, it played fine, but then it immediately desynched the next time through. Now the image loads and starts playing before the sound starts when I refresh, just like any other one.

What it boils down to, is it preloads all the data first, and starts them at the same time. Although there is some timing- polling going on, you obviously can't have a 30 second mp3 and a 5 second .gif and expect them to end at the same time.

Also, there does seem to be some issues with using VBR (variable bit rate) MP3s, and very low quality MP3s (ie. < 48Kbps, 22Khz). I believe that's the primary reason you might get a "slowed down" or fast-sounding MP3.

I've thought about adding an additional option: "restart .gif animation on audio replay." This would eliminate the eventual unsynching after many loops. The only downside to this is that IE likes to make a "click" sound every time the image is reset.

Okay. So, the short short is, it should be generally the same "length" (time-wise) gif and mp3, and NOT a variable bit rate. What would the ideal bit-rate mp3 be? And yes, re-syncing at the beginning of each cycle would make a lot of sense.

Does anyone read the comments before adding their own? Downvoters do you realize it isnt creating a flash file or turning your GIF/MP3 into a flash file? Its just a preloader. The picture/text/sound are displayed exactly as before.

^ ashpoop: A now common misconception. You don't use Flash. At all. You use the same .gif and .mp3 just as before. It buffers the data to automate "refresh-start" and does some time-polling.
