Actually, you're the one who's miscomprehended things here - this is Tommy Makem and the Clancy Brothers' version of the Dublin street ballad from the 19th century that impressed Joyce to such a great extent, he wrote a novel about it. Where's this joke you speak of?

I can assure you that they are Irish, though they did emigrate to the USA in their late teens. :P
