Most mainstream religions begin as an "alternate to what others think." Given the momentum and backing to any religion any religion can become extremists because of ignorance. The day I see people suicide bombing in the name of the Flying Spaghetti Monster is the day I officially come to terms with the fact that no one on this planet thinks anymore. Grown ups with imaginary friends.
