Considering all future starship designs were based off the original NX- class they kinda had to make it look similar to other federation ships.

Fixed the spelling error. Thanks for the comments. And A7tec. Their was alot of outcry that the NX look too much like the akira-class ship when the show came out.

Well obviously in Trek production the Akira class came first, but when they were designing NX-01 they decided to do a reverse cannon trick and have the Akira based on the NX-01. Those tricky Paramount kids. NX-74205 ownz all.

I think paramount was lasy. The Akira class first appered in 1996 and in 2001 is when Enterprise came out. Just saying that the Akira is based on the NX is just pulling hairs on all trekkies
