...the water is vaporised by the heat, which increases the surface of both water and molten wax. Therefore, the hydrogen radicals now have contact with the air and react with its oxygen - boom! Kids, don't do this at home!

It got dark because the camera adapted to the brightness of the explosion automatically, so that the total brightness of the picture was kept at a constant level.
