The word that would clear much of this up is "prejudice." In sociological terms, "racism" = prejudice + power. Sure, decades ago blacks all over the South hated whites; but that didn't make them racist. Using the same word for blacks who "hate" whites as whites who "hate" blacks completely ignores the sociological context in which each group exists, both together and separately.
