Sometimes it happens on purpose, but other times, no matter how hard you try, you can't think of that perfect punchline that would really make the joke hit hard. Sometimes you get a moment of inspiration that was more productive than a week of brainstorming. Not everything is calculated man. As an example, the new Simpsons episodes are completely built around "jokes". It's as if they have a factory of (monkey) writers typing up as many ideas as possible, and then insert them into the show. They may have been funny on paper but they don't translate well on screen. In the past, most of the jokes would often sneak up on you, and they were directly integrated into the story. They weren't forced, and they were funny. And now because they are so calculated and so set up, they are hollow and expected.
