Since it was a Japanese film, there were no animal rights laws at the time. During the ending waterfall scene, they killed a few Milo's and Otis's.

Yeah I watched that film recently, I found it a bit odd at the ending credits when everyone's name was japanese except for the narrator. Turns out it was filmed in japan and then later localized for english-speaking audiences.
