Doubt it will last long, but 5 for the first site I saw about it. Max should have not had the featured user section at all and just made the recently created column twice as long with the user name next to the site name, colored whichever way.

Featured users is an attempt to inspire decent sites, since a lack of those is one of YTMND's greatest problems. That being said, please dismiss everything I say due to the coloring of my name. Racist.

An attempt that didn't work and a tag that was rewarded to many undeserving users who were selected by a couple of other users, therefore selection was heavily biased by personal opinion in some cases. DemocracyTMND

I think some people shouldn't be featured, (myself included), but to say the FU section has "killed ytmnd" is pretty naive. If you want to see better sites, make them yourself. Stop blaming others. If ytmnd has declined as of late, (and I personally don't think it's much worse than it used to be), it's not because of a box taking up 15% of the frontpage. It's because a lot of talented users left and a wave of moonman/danson/etc newf*gs and gimmicks rushed in. Just my opinion.

It's more than just a box taking up 15% of the front page. how much traffic do you think that little 15% gets? feature users it dragged traffic away from other sections, relatively unknowns hardly ever got attention, people got sick of seeing the same sh*t from the same people over and over, and left. featured users had no incentive to keep creating good content since everything they created would guaranteed to get mega viewz.

If it's "dragging away" so many views from other sections, why haven't we seen declines in average views of sites on up-and-coming and top viewed? Why haven't average views plummeted for "recently created" sites that don't make it to the up-and-coming? The average featured user site gets maybe 2-4k views assuming it doesn't make U&C or top-viewed. That ain't sh*t. Is it unfair to others? Sure. Is it killing the site? Hardly.

Actually it looks like most featured sites that don't make U&C/top-viewed get around 1.5-2k views. "mega viewz"? I don't think so. Anyways, I agree the featured section should be taken down, but I don't think it's killing/killed ytmnd.

I like what feature users TRIED to do. It just didn't work out because YTMND is a caustic group. If people WERE given votes on featured users then the entire list would be full of people who got alt-voted on and would just use it to troll YTMND constantly (which they already do). And if you tried to limit the alt votes by giving them a join date limit or something, people would bitch about how THAT isn't democracy and how unfair it is. A group is its own worst enemy =P

If featured users is to stay, maybe it can be done differently. For example, featured users should be selected solely on the views/votes/scores (or whatever it is) algorithm, and instead of taking every site into account, the list should be updated every 2 months taking into account only sites made during that period with a minimum of, say, 3 sites created in this space in order to be considered. That way it gets rid of inactive and undeserving users. Or bring back worthwhile ytmnds for every visitor to see

I think they should have featured commenters. Like people who make comments that get a bunch of +'s on their comments all the time would get like a black name or something

it's a nice idea but essentially pointless. Maybe there should just be a balance of current successful sites mixed with older ones on the front page and no different colored users. Except max, who should be transparent.

Featured users are already selected by an algorithm. But that algorithm can be shaped any number of ways. Does someone who made, I dunno, say 1000 horrible sites equal to a person who makes five good ones? There's not a "correct" answer to that judgment call, just like there is no "correct" set of numbers that would make for a featured list even 50% of us would all we happy with. YTMND is different to different people, and people will always bitch about it over the internet.

I can see where you are coming from. Just because a user gets a high rating it doesn't mean that everyone will like their sites. I guess you need a balance of styles if you are going to implement a system like this. I don't know how this site is going to gain any popularity again, though.
