There was a time when reading wasn't just for f*gs. And neither was writing. People wrote books and movies. Movies with stories, that made you care about whose *ss it was and why it was farting. And I believe that time can come again!

i hate marketers. i go back into the 80s to avoid them and there they are ready to rape my childhood memories in front of my eyes. if they don't remake something from the 80s completely, they just snap endless sequels onto it like so many parasitic leeches, i.e. SW Episodes 1-3, and TR2N (which I hope will be really good since they at least got some of the same actors)

2008-08-07 23:37:37

Umm, bob? The 80s were kinda the heyday for crappy marketing. The Golden Age of plastic crap passed off as nostalgia. When stuff like Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars went from metal to plastic. When LEGOS turned into predefined "play sets." The era of Care Bears, Cabbage Patch Kids, My Pretty Pony, The Karate Kid, Ghost Busters t-shirts and Less Than Zero. Pretty in Pink and Sixteen Candles are funny, sure, unless that's what your high school was actually like.

2008-08-08 11:36:34

well yeah there was still plenty of marketing, and it was still pretty bad, but at least most of it was actually imaginative and fresh. advertisers were taking their time and trying to be creative, rather than settling for ripping off another 4-year-old internet meme. a jingle back then usually involved a choir of humans, a composer and either a synthesizer or a band - now it's usually just 3-6 notes on FL studio. when's the last time you saw a car ad on tv, with original music made for the ad?

2008-08-08 11:37:50

Now they usually find some sell-out band or label to license a song from - the rare times you hear original music it's just soulless, emofied 80s remakes. Artists were allowed to put real thought and technique into corporate logos, and companies were proud to fully express their brand - nowadays companies want to be known by their initials - DQ, BK, etc, though KFC seems to be on to the very latest trends and has since gone back to "Kentucky Fried Chicken", complete with retro-style packaging design..

2008-08-08 12:21:57

I can't believe I'm defending marketing...but: BMW went so far as to commission original FILMS for their ads in the 2000s. And the licensing of music to commercials got its start in the 80s. It'd been done before then but Nike's use of the Beatles "Revolution" pretty much started the phenomenon you (and I) hate. And as for logos, the Nike swoosh was designed for $35 by a freelancer (a decade later she got some Nike stock as a gift, so she didn't totally get the shaft).

2008-08-08 12:26:22

KFC started using its initials for two reasons: they wanted to avoid both the word "fried" for "consumer health" reasons and they wanted to distance themselves with the southern plantation owner image associated with the Col. You're right, though, it was weird that after all that they recently went back to the full name, reintroduced the Colonel, and selected "Sweet Home Alabama" as music for their ad campaign. But I suspect that's because "racism is dead in America" right?

2008-08-08 12:31:14

My real point in these posts is that what you are seeing is merely an extension of a mindset that has been in place for a very very long time. Even in the 1700s much of culture was about selling nostalgia for previous eras. What's the Renaissance other than people dancing around pretending to be ancient Greeks and Romans? If anything, it's just been amped up, much like Frank Zappa noted. The cycles just run really quickly now so that we get Hairspray the movie based on the play based on the movie.

Scientist Guy: Why couldn't they just read a book?! Now it's all over... the president's dead and the reading rainbow will hit the planet in four hours. Levar: ...Fire up the rocket, I'm going up there. (dramatic music begins) Scientist Guy: You can't do this! Levar we'll find another way! Don't sacrifice yourself for people who ignored your warnings, people who refused to pick a book to save their own lives! Levar:...I have to hope that now that this has happened that people will start to read again.

Levar (cont'd): I have to hope that the next generation won't repeat the sins of their fathers. I haven't given hope on the people of Earth Scientist Guy. I have to do this. (dramatic music crescendos) Scientist Guy:... Good luck Levar. The Earth shouldn't have to lose a man as great as you. I'll tell everyone about your sacrifice. I'll tell them all to read, to pick up a book... Maybe this time they'll listen.
