I am not one of those people who vote for the 'lesser evil'. Frankly, aside from RP, Kucinich and Gravel, the rest of them are roughly equal to me.

OK, I'll give you that RP has a bunch of ideas that I whole heartedly support, but can you imagine if a Democratic junior senator from Illinois, who also happens to be black (and regularly gets called a Muslim by people who know better) ran on the tenets that he'd avoid war with Iran at all costs, fight against the Patriot Act, and end the war on drugs? The right would leave him shredded and heaped in a pile next to Dean, Nader, Sharpton, and Mondale and ANYONE running on the Rep ticket would be pres.

Furthermore, and I mean this in all seriousness, how exactly are we going to dismantle the current taxation system AND have universal health care? If I have to choose between the two, I'd much rather be the kind of nation that takes care of its own (I make enough money that I can take care of more than just myself). I'm willing to listen if a good chunk of that money would come from the trillions we spend each year on defense systems designed to shoot down soviet missiles and giant meteors.

I only ask that politicians run on what they honestly believe in. I do not vote for liars. You have no idea WHAT they are going to do. Ron Paul has gone extremely far by being honest. Too bad he happens to be long in the tooth.

The Iraq War is unpopular. So is the Patriot Act. Dean chickened out early when he wasn't winning. He acted like a kook at times. Sharpton, I don't care about. Nader was cursed with running in a third party, and by not being extremely presentable. Mondale was wishy washy.

Besides, Mondale had some terrible ideas, like declaring a ridiculously low income level, something like $45,000 to $50,000 and above to be 'wealthy' and to be taxed accordingly. As for Obama, I have every reason to believe that if he were more straightforward, he would be doing even better. I wish I had a dime for every time he was criticized for being vague, or for not talking enough about the issues.

There is solid proof that government makes health care WORSE.

People from Canada come down to the USA to get healthcare, because they get sick of waiting up there. In England, costs rise, supplies shrink, so there is lots of rationing. In American hospitals, bed sheets are changed constantly. In English hospitals, bed sheets are flipped over, to save on laundry costs. In America, you can see a dentist now. In England, you have to wait weeks. In some countries with universal healthcare, they don't even let you in if you have certain medical conditions.

They do this to save money for their strained budgets. Another example is that in certain countries with universal healthcare, the government gets the idea that it can control your personal life too. I have experienced many of your arguments against socialized medicine within our free market version. After college I had no health care for about four years. I saw first hand what free clinics, ER care, and outright denial of service feel like, right here in the US. As well, I ran up some serious debt I'm still paying off due to a chronic back problem that wasn't covered (pre-existing condition) even once I had very good (and very expensive) health care.

Health care is obviously extremely expensive for a number of reasons, but someone who wants to take privatized, corporate greed out of the picture would certainly have my support. As for Obama, I lived in Chicago while he was coming up. He was clear what he stood for on his rise to the senate and in his grassroots campaign. Rarely do I pick "shrewd" over "painfully honest" but a candidate like Obama has no choice but to play his cards closely.

The US just isn't that liberal, even if a large % of conservative voters would greatly benefit from typically leftist policies. BTW, I voted for neither Clinton nor Gore when Nader was running and, despite living in Democrat "safe" states, have never lived down the taunts from those who swear voters like me are the reason we have Bush in the first place (obviously that argument completely disregards the huge numbers of people who voted for Bush gleefully, but when does logic ever enter political debate?)

Ron Paul isn't fit to lead the country. The man's an idiot. It doesn't take a genius to take a stand against a bill in Congress - Ron Paul shoots down so many bills, I wonder how he secures any appropriations for his district. This man isn't a politician, he's a goddamn physician, he just gets elected and reelected to the House year after year because Texans are too stupid to not elect an idealist who doesn't bring home the bacon.

and I wouldn't want Paul as President during a national crisis. The man would respond worse to overseas developments than Jimmy Carter, except that Jimmy Carter actually wanted to build US relations with foreign countries, whereas Paul thinks it's smart to isolate the US from the rest of the world in an era of Internationalism and globalism.

And about his economic views... the man thinks that the Fed is contributing to rampant inflation, yet he suggests that the Board of Governors should be ELECTED! Are you kidding, Paul? The Fed would just lower the federal funds rate to 0% and print massive amounts of federal reserve notes, throwing the economy into a massive expansionary boost so that its members would gain re-election... leaving the subsequent hyperinflation and economic stagnation to another administration.

Ron Paul is so worried about the government becoming too powerful, yet Obama would make a perfect Head of State with his charisma and charm, while his role as Head of Government would probably be subdued thanks to his bipartisan, compromising stances on policy agenda. Obama would most likely reduce the power of government and help balance the national budget through downsizing the military, not the other way around. /rantoff
