It doesn't happen when they are riding on the ferris wheel. The timestamp at the beginning of the movie is "April 27, 6:42 PM." The timestamp on the "ferris wheel" scene at the end of the movie is "April 27, 6:17 PM." The end part of the movie is simply there to make it look like it was a real amateur film. Besides, aren't the two people in the "ferris wheel" scene dead by the end of the movie?

Furthermore, the thing that falls into the water isn't when the camera focuses on the ocean. It is when the camera focuses on the couple. If you look on the left hand side (behind the girl), you will see water, and then a big splash.

Ya, I could tell I was going to get a headache just by watching the first few minutes. BTW, in the backstory of the movie the whole entire thing is that apparently there is some sort of plankton people find at the bottom of the ocean and its suppose to be healthy for you, so they make a drink out of it. And then there are these predator bacteria that eat the plankton, and the cloverfield monster is suppose to be a whole bunch of the predator bacteria combined and hunting the plankton in the people.

just watch - ten years after the Blair Witch Project comes out, a similar movie appears and from it comes the same retarded arguments instead of valid critiques. 1. "Duh, I'm too stupid to figure out in advance that a movie shot as a handheld camera would be shakey and disorienting" 2. Okay movie. It had a lot of potential but it really blew the ending, it needed more moments of tension, and there was an awful shortage of dead bodies left in the wake of a Godzilla sized monster. It was mostly just too short.

Ok. I just saw Cloverfield. Ideas follow.

The monster was really just a child, come up from some crevasse, come onto the surface to find a shell, much like a hermit crab (or Zoidberg) looks for a new shell. It thought the skyskrapers, the Statue of Liberty, and the Brooklyn Bridge were potential shells, and was testing their structural stability. They were not sufficient for its purposes, so it went to Central Park to mope.

The monster was really a space vessel, and the spidery things were its creators and pilots. This is how it sustained such heavy damage: It was designed with a thick hull, and possibly a force field. It was an invasion of Earth.

The monster appeared in Manhattan to look for a mate... Just as Hud postulated, the spidery things wanted to "make him their queen." At the end, when the monster was above Hud in Central Park, its 'air sacs' inflated on the side of its head, just as many birds and reptiles do as a mating ritual. Upon its observation that it had Hud's attention, a sign of aquiescence to mating, it 'nipped' him, just as dolphins do. Unfortunately, Hud's body just didn't live up to the monster's expectations.

Interesting theory. My only gripe is the time frame. It took a few minutes to knock a few buildings down, and in the end the dweeb who went pack for the piece of *ss said it was 7 or so hours later. 7 hours? That's a long time for a monster of that size to roam and hope in and out of the water. Manhattan should have been completely flattened in less time with a thing of that size wandering around and attacking.

To answer Kryson: seeing the miniature head of the fake plastic statue of Liberty pulled off isn't too shocking or compelling. Honestly, I do believe it is the landmarks in NYC that contribute to its being destroyed. The Empire State Building? Can you imagine King Kong climbing the Sears Tower? As cool as that would be, it's not as iconic.

I live in Atlanta--It would be totally awesome to see a monster movie about the destruction of our city. Bonus points if it happens on a Friday night during rush hour.

Well, my theory for why New York City always gets destroyed by monsters and stuff in the movies is because it's near the ocean, where a bunch of weird stuff could come from.

well, in transformers, they pretty much wipe out the town they fight in, which wasn't really a major city. not technically a monster movie, but still.

Pittsburgh has been destroyed in Land of the Dead, I believe. And Philly was destroyed in ATHFCMFFT. They do go other places.

New York was perfect for this movie: Manhattan is an overpopulated, heavily built up island. It's hard to evacuate 2 million people using only a few tunnels and bridges. It makes the characters (and you, in this movie) feel trapped. You need many large buildings for the monster to hide in so the military isn't able to surround it and load it full of tank shells. Other cities don't have as many large buildings since they have more room to spread out.
