What have you done?! As much as I like it (the music's well chosen btw), you've unleashed a monster possibly even greater than that humorist prank call crap that was #1 top viewed for months. Hell, this is even in top sponsored after a few hours.

I read that there is an in game character that sends you messages and presents named Mom and after a long time a lot of presents and generic messages would accumulate and that this is a big joke that people who were addicted to the joke would be able to get. The real mom didn't sent any gifts, this is just a farce, and a pretty funny one at that, made even funnier by the fact that all these people buy into it as well as the creator, but it's still stolen. Very funny how gullible people are, though.

Why not just referrer ban digg.com? Unless you want digg to ban ytmnd links in future, which makes sense I guess.

It comes down to the fact that every YTMND that drives a massive amount of traffic is stolen content, I don't care if you didn't create this, but I don't want to see this on the top viewed for the next 6 months and I'm going to send people away from it for a few days until things die down. I don't feel the need to pay to host for tens of thousands of people to view a YTMND that was ripped off from elsewhere. Don't get your panties in a bunch.

Why do people here continue to fail to understand, after all these years, the difference between recontextualizing and stealing. Don't they teach "context" in school anymore? Original ytmnd = recontextualized, juxtaposed irony. Lifted video/slide show/meme from _______ = stolen content. It's just not that hard to understand.

I'll 5 something that the original user didn't make once. Just this once. I can't speak for someone I don't know... and I certainly can't speak for someone who I only find out about after their death. I can only say that this boys mother most likely wasn't able to care for her children the way she wanted too. Through Animal Crossing, I think she finally felt like she was giving her children something they could enjoy. It just goes to show you how tragic life can be. She never got to see them happy from this

All of your examples for "massively popular" ytmnds are years old. Go check the top rated/top faved sites and you will find that they are all original creations. There is no correlation with quality and the number of hits. Hell just because a site gets a relatively large amount of hits doesn't mean it is necessarily popular...it just happened to be linked to a heavily trafficked site.

Does no one realize that this story isn't even real? I played this game a couple of years ago and always got presents from my 'mom', the in-game mom. If you didn't play the game for 18 months, you'd receive loads when you turned it on again.

"I just wish there was a place I could host this that lots of people could enjoy it without it really being a big deal that it's stolen/costing the site owner a lot of money." You can host it the same place you stole it from, 4chan, or ANY IMAGEDUMP ON THE PLANET. It's a farce that you're treating as a true story. THE MOM DIDN'T SEND ANY PRESENTS. The mom sat on her chair and indulged in a game for purely selfish reasons. It's not a touching story, it's fake and it's depressing if taken as real.
+5

2007-11-19 17:06:14

"All I wanted was a high rating" - There are no points for first place. Going around the internet and stealing other people's work in order to get high ratings on ytmnd is not a noble practice, nor does it make you "deserving", if that term even relates, of a high rating. Just because other people are unoriginal does not mean that your unoriginality is a good thing. They also gained nothing and are unoriginal thieves that tried to turn this place into a sh*tty, uncreative image dump.
+5

2007-11-19 17:07:56

"Besides, I like that I touched SOME people, even if most of YTMND hates me." ...I don't want to be touched by you. I don't want to be touched by the guy who originally made this. And I definitely don't come to ytmnd to get touched. Go touch some youtubers with this sh*t.

"All I wanted was a high rating" - "I just wish there was a place I could host this that lots of people could enjoy it without it really being a big deal that it's stolen/costing the site owner a lot of money." YTMND is not a popularity contest. It's supposed to be a creative outlet. Just because max has loose standards of enforcing that principle doesn't mean that what he did was wrong or undeserved. You're attempting to profit off the stolen work of others, but there's no profit to be had.
+7

2007-11-19 17:14:36

Make your own sh*t, don't be a votewhore. Nobody hates you, they just hate that you're an unoriginal votewhore who is the of the diametrical opposite of the intention of this site and the part that keeps it alive. The biggest thing you have to realize is that this image that you stole is a farce. The mother is a literary device intended to mock the narrator (who is not the writer), who is falsely attributing the actions of the in game mother for those of his real mother and thus glorifying her selfishness.
+7

2007-11-19 17:16:56

The joke: Even if the mother did send presents to her kids, it's still not touching as people who are completely out of touch with reality would say, but as she didn't send the presents the entire point of the story is to show how stupid the narrator is for falsely assuming his mother cared about him. Is that the uplifting story you were going for? I doubt it. It's pretty funny, though, but very dark. It's just too bad that you didn't bother to understand the material you stole.

Your statements are pretty telling as to how much you think of yourself. You're not "in the middle of a war", and if you were, you put it there yourself by stealing something written by those 10% and marketed for the 90% in order to mock their initial sentimental reaction to it. In a vacuum, it's funny, but in that sense it's just a stupid inside joke. Regardless, your site isn't very important, it isn't yours, and nothing will change as a result of this site. That's one hell of a WAR.

I also don't think that just because you're an *ssh*le means that you can qualify yourself as an *ssh*le intellectual. I also think those categorizations are stupid stereotypes which are only useful for self aggrandizing propaganda, which doesn't surprise me. "All of you stupid emo kids or smart *ssh*les are ruining the world I'm stuck in the middle of you." Why don't you change your name to RyJesus and just be honest with your self.

I just don't like being treated like I created this site with the sole intention of causing trouble. I wanted a high rating. Are we NOT supposed to want a high rating? Are we supposed to come to YTMND, and make something original and creative, and say "I don't care if this gets 50 1s, as long as I made something original and creative I'm happy!" Yes, of course being noticed is nice, but when I get a high rating it means people ENJOYED what I made. I don't care whether it's original or not.

2007-11-19 17:34:29

Of course, if I can make something creative and original AND score a high rating, that's great! But if I see something that I think people will like, I'll make a YTMND out of it. People LIKED this YTMND. Lots of people did. I read the comments about it on digg, and I felt good that I was able to warm the hearts of a lot of people. I don't give a sh*t who it pisses off.

Also sentimental is not the same as emo. Sentimentality is part of romanticism which is the dominant modern cultural influence, and sentimentality is frivolous and superficial, as the reactions to this site clearly show. Also, if you asked a romantic whether a parent who spent all their time on a video games was a good parent, they'd probably feel the opposite of the way the feel now about this site, but I guess that spin reveals hypocrisy, doesn't it?

Are we supposed to come to YTMND, and make something original and creative, and say "I don't care if this gets 50 1s, as long as I made something original and creative I'm happy!"" That's not a bad place to start. Some people also say, "I put this onto ytmnd for other people to enjoy." However, saying "I want other people to enjoy this" when really you mean "I want a high rating" is incredibly dishonest. Now, who would say that?

""I had NO idea it would take off like it did, and frankly, I don't care." "All I wanted was a high rating."- As in, I care more about the rating of a site than how many views it gets. 3.00 rating with 500,000 views means a lot of people saw it and HATED it, and that's no good. 4.70 rating with 5,000 views means that not many people saw it, but those that saw it enjoyed it. And that's what I like to see. And yes, "made" was a bad choice of words. "Posted" would've been better.
-2

2007-11-19 17:39:02

Well let's see. If I post something and it gets a low rating, that means that A LOT OF PEOPLE WHO SAW IT DIDN'T ENJOY IT! Meaning that I wasted a minute of somebody else's life. But a high rating means that I made someone laugh, or cry, or whatever.

Nobody loves you, they just rated the stuff you stole highly. Get a personality, bro, quit stealing other people's stuff in order to inflate your ego. "high rating means that I made someone laugh, or cry, or whatever." I thought a high rating meant that someone rated it highly. Do you really think that a high rating means someone laughed or cried? How do you explain this, then? Come on, now, quit being so superficial. It's so easy to make you look the fool. 5 stars doesn't mean anything more than 5 stars. Not just real in the sense that it actually happened to the person, but real in the sense that the mother really gave the kid presents (which obviously is not the case as per people who have played the game and the evidence in the story). True, the guy who wrote this strip still wrote it, but, although you cited your sources, not everyone viewing this site is from YTMND, and don't know to check the sources. Does that make them idiots? Probably. But that's a moot point-you're making people think that this is your material (as evidenced by all the condolences you're getting in this thread), and that's intellectually dishonest. http://omgnewz.ytmnd.com/ - RySenkari makes a site about how it is lame to repost news articles, then makes http://stanislavpetrovtribute.ytmnd.com/, a screenshot of a news article, http://endofourworld.ytmnd.com/, a story stolen from the internet, http://bonestell.ytmnd.com/, stolen form the internet, and now this site, stolen from the internet. Wow, look at all controversy. Max does what he wants, his $$$. The original artist may be happy or sad that their content is popular though uncited on the net. Stealing is bad, go in the corner and think about what you've done. Then again, am I glad it happened? Of course. If this hadn't been made, I'd never have been exposed to it. In the end, the internet content consumers win. As for the content itself, it's beautiful on one level and darkly humorous on another. Glad to have seen it. Vote withheld; pity.

After watching people downvote the parody I made of this today I decided this whole site bugs the sh*t out of me for a few reasons: The gif re-posted here has to be a fiction. I'm virtually positive that no one died. The gif was removed from context, so we'll never know the truth, but I think it's a joke about the game taken out of context, if you pay attention to the subtler points of the "tragic" ending.

We know that there is a character named "Mom" in the game that sends you stuff. There's no way the *real* author, whose life and [parental] death apparently revolved around this game, didn't know that. Taken out of context, set to generic sad music, and posted here, it seems like it's autobiographical, but I don't buy it. It isn't some documentary film. It isn't a "found" diary. It isn't even an actual suicide note, left on a Myspace page, that so many here associate as a joke about being "emo."

It's just a gif. It bugs the crap out of me to watch people get self-righteous and moralistic about this "story," over what amounts to something as sincere as a Hummel statue of Jesus or a Hallmark card about the death of a baby or a Precious Moments collector plate of Ghandi or a Che Guevara t-shirt. What is sad here is that anyone can be so emotionally stunted that they'd need a sappy (and probably misconstrued) story in gif form to shock them into feeling "real" pain. It's just plain crazy, is all.

This isn't a war between emos and *ssh*les. It's a war between people who think and people who don't. If you want to do what you were told to do (death+sad music = cry) then cry, but don't get pissed at people that don't think it's sad. LOL AT PEOPLE WHO CRY ABOUT DEAD PEOPLE THEY DON'T KNOW! and since I just said something agianst 90% of the people that voted on this site. I can expect my comment to be massively downvoted. I'd say the purpose of the site is to entertain others. You shouldn't care about your rating. You usually can tell you're entertaining others if your site is top viewed and/or highest rated. But that's it. Don't look too deeply into ytmnd.... Also this story is indeed really really fake. The fact that all the gifts had the same message is the giveaway.

The frog is an amphibian in the order Anura (meaning "tail-less", from Greek an-, without + oura, tail), formerly referred to as Salientia (Latin saltare, to jump). The name frog derives from Old English frogga,[1] (compare Old Norse frauki, German Frosch, older Dutch spelling kikvorsch), cognate with Sanskrit plava (frog), probably deriving from Proto-Indo-European praw = "to jump".[2] Adult frogs are characterised by long hind legs, a short body, webbed digits, protruding eyes and the absence of a tail.

Most frogs have a semi-aquatic lifestyle, but move easily on land by jumping or climbing. They typically lay their eggs in puddles, ponds or lakes, and their larvae, called tadpoles, have gills and develop in water. Adult frogs follow a carnivorous diet, mostly of arthropods, annelids and gastropods. Frogs are most noticeable by their call, which can be widely heard during the night or day, mainly in their mating season. The distribution of frogs ranges from tropic to subarctic regions, but most species ar

However, populations of certain frog species are significantly declining. A distinction is often made between frogs and toads on the basis of their appearance, caused by the convergent adaptation among so-called toads to dry environments; however, this distinction has no taxonomic basis. The only family exclusively given the common name "toad" is Bufonidae, but many speci

though this is probably supposed to be a heart warming story, I found it downright hilarious, especially when the kid played the game and thought his real mom sent him all those presents!

Yeah, but the generic in-game mom isn't as really sincere as if his mom had written it. In-game mom makes it sound like "We were going through your room and found this and invoked Dad to start bawling. -Mom" You'd be able to tell the difference, trust me.

Oooohhh, that's right, you did get letters from your in-game "mom" in that game. Okay, that actually makes this hilarious.

Can you explain the game more, what the presents are...

Basically, when you send another person in the game an item, it shows up as a 'present' in the mail.

2007-11-18 19:50:57

Presents are items that you collect in-game by finding them, completing various tasks, etc. If you have a village on the same memory card as another player (or if someone else's card is in the same Gamecube), you can send a present to their village.

Well there are 4 houses in the village, each with a mailbox. You can write a letter on the stationery item and affix an item to it (like a piece of furniture or a cute shirt) and then mail it to one of the other villagers so they can receive it when they log on and check their mail.

So this is something she played by herself, on a console, not as an online thing, or a web community. ?

2007-11-18 19:59:25

That always boggled my mind, how could you send a freaking sofa and manage to fit it inside a mailbox, let alone being able to carry it in your pocket?

2007-11-18 20:10:33

Yeah, it's a console game that up to 4 people can have their own character and house in. When you turn the game on, you tell it which character you are. It's a lot like Harvest Moon except a major draw of the game is decorating your house from a selection of hundreds of items.

2007-11-18 20:15:44

It's on a console (not online), but the game plays out like an online community. Days pass by in real-time in the game, regardless of whether or not it is turned on, and NPC's will notice how long you've been gone. Up to 4 people can make characters in one town, but (being on Gamecube) only one can be "logged on" at a time.

2007-11-18 20:35:38

Now that I think about it, you can send presents to other people who own the game by giving them specific passwords to say at the store. To do this, though, you need to know and enter the other person's in-game name and town name, or else it doesn't work. So, theoretically, this could be an online game.

http://www.gamespot.com/gamecube/rpg/animalcrossing/. It's a strangely addictive game. I played it for six months on a regular basis. Then one day I said what the hell am I playing and never touched it again. Then someone broke into my apartment and stole my Gamecube, Xbox and all my games along with a lot of other stuff and I never saw them again.
