I disagree with Kaizen's sentiments and I also don't think that effort matters at all. But, it was somewhat creative, and with my new low low standards that's all I really ask for. Still horribly paced, though.

Sure effort matters. If someone puts effort into sh*t, it's still sh*t, and it wasn't really effort, it was a waste of time. I can't sync worth a sh*t because so this is well executed. ALSO: The pacing is fine. It works with the suspense of the film trick, as well as Mario's WTF moment.

Effort is one of three primary domains of any site that counts for something. Obviously classic style sites take less physical effort to produce (not necessarily less creative effort), this doesn't mean they're all 1-worthy. Humor and originality are also important to consider when voting: Excess of any one of them is usually 4/5-worthy.

imo, effort isn't an element of a YTMND that can be used to put down a rating, only to boost it. I like this a lot, and agree with korf with it's pacing. Could have gone a little faster for my tastes.

I wholeheartedly disagree with the pacing gripe. The magic trick needs a few seconds to build suspense, Mario's few seconds of confusion gives him life, and this leads to the ending sequence which I didn't see coming. Speed it up and it's convoluted.

When both of them take ~10 seconds to go from in their door to back in the frame, it screws up the timing. The intro into the second scene could be trimmed dramatically to no great loss. The 5 second pause to read a banner which could have been placed above the magic trick itself was the most egregious thing. That really made me like... too much exposition, not enough PRESTIGE. The movie is The Prestige. Take a lesson or two from the movie and this site would improve.

Also, I'd have to say that your definition of effort is mostly semantics, and is even harder to define than you make it seem. When is effort wasted? When the person who makes it thinks it is sh*t it is a waste of time or only when other people think it is sh*t? Is Sisyphus not exerting effort? I find most "classic" sites to be an exercise in mimicry and nostalgia, not creativity. Sometimes it's an exercise in mimicry and stealing jokes, as well, but I don't think those are commendable either. However, this site is somewhat creative, but still terribly paced.
