We aren't "rewarding" users here, we are participating in a system designed to make good sites go up in the list and bad sites go down. Sites must be judged in isolation from the users who make them. In fact I try to think of my "base vote" before I even see who made the site. Then I check descriptions and sources, but I still try not to let them affect my vote too much. Comment sections are important only where the author uses them to add additional supporting information/data to the site as a whole.

I disagree. Generally, the reason people want a higher rating is for publicity. Lots of people make sites because they have fun doing it, of course, but they also want lots of publicity. They want the WORLD to see their headpasting skills. Giving a site a five because it is good work provides an incentive to the author to improve upon or make even better content. You're right in that when we rate we usually determine how many views the site will get (unless they sponsor, are featured, or use the WoW forums)

but it ALSO functions as a carrot-and-stick system.

That said, you should TRY not to vote on a site based on its creator's conduct as a user.

So, Sitsu, you are saying that, had he not commented, you would have voted 5, but after reading his comment you decided not to vote? I may not be very good at economics, but it seems to me like you're saying that his comment had a net cost of 5 stars and 1 vote, which would have raised the average of the site and would have better represented the actual population's opinion of the site, as the voting system is designed. Who knows, maybe I'm crazy.

True, it does function as carrot and stick in that sense. People would not be making good sites if it weren't for the publicity. But I'd rather see harsh comments and a good site than poor sites made by really nice people. I don't want to chastise people, I want to see good sites. And to do that we need good voters.

my cynicism is a reflection of distaste with what i've seen, otherwise i'm probably happier than i've been in years. If everyone voted based on your behavior in your comments sections and your methods here, all of your sites would have 0 votes (or be all 1's). That's not exactly the best method of figuring out which sites are best. A better method would be to downvote the comments you don't like and vote fairly on the sites that you do. Amazing how max already thought of that! But, honestly, getting butthurt and sentimental about what someone literally says in a comments section of a humor website... that's absurd.

Abstaining from voting is basically taking a sh*t on the quality of the site, regardless of whether it was good or bad. We already know you think it's a good site. What you're doing is saying "yea it's a good site, but I'm withholding the rating I believe it deserves because I don't like you." It dilutes the quality of the product when they are judged not for what they are, but for who their creators are.

Well actually I have made a few art sites but, none even come close to being as awesome as this. And maybe that's why they fail. I put effort into them but if not enough people enjoys them then well, the site is going to get a 3 and fade into obscurity. Votes may not seem to matter, but they do, to the extent that a site needs to get good enough ratings to be seen and noticed. The sad truth is that effort doesn't matter that much either. If your site isn't funny or interesting to the general public it fails

If your site is mildly funny and interesting to a wide audience then it will get lots of views, but if it is intensely interesting to a small audience it will not get lots of views. However, I wouldn't call the one that gets by on being a slightly amusing diversion for a lot of people which they would all gladly trade for something more interesting more valuable than something which you would be hard-pressed to replace with something better, even if only for a small group.
