want to get this at the top... a few corrections. The Railgun was in Quake _2_, and probably in more before that (some Doom DeHackED patches have one). The Heavy in TFC was obviously taken from the heavy in the original Team Fortress (the Quake 1 mod), and Miniguns have been in use in FPS since the beginning (Wolf3D). iD wins.

this has probably been in other games as well, but the most recent to come to mind is the ability to take turrets and "fixed" gun emplacements with you was one of the selling points in Lost Planet.

I don't really think you can steal the idea of a minigun. Its been replicated is so many other FPSs that it doesn't really count as theft now. But the hedgehog and shield grenades bit was obviously copied.

Back in the day of Quake 1 me and a friend from highschool pumped out tons of mods just for fun. One of them was Grenade Quake, which added like 20 kinds of grenades. We had the boring old proximity grenade that stuck to walls and exploded when you got near it. We had the dog grenade that shot a dog out and it flipped and span all around like a grenade did, then when it landed it ran at somebody then exploded. We had the teleport grenade that was like the proximity grenade but when it exploded it

would teleport you to a random part of the map. We had the gravity grenade that sucked everything towards it in at high speeds for 5 seconds then exploded. Then we had the MIRV grenade that, when it exploded, would turn into 8 more grenades that would bounce twice then explode themselves. We also had the force grenade that repelled everything that got close to it and you couldn't shoot past. Looks like they aren't very original ideas after all?

I innovated this thing called a Shark Rocket and I shoot it at them. And it really annoys sharks. And then I just wade there in the water and they come at me. But I'm really good at eluding them. I know this hip move, it's something porpoises do and I then I pretend that I have a bottleneck and I stab them in the gills. And it really is effective.

it is hard to make an fps truly innovative. There isnt really anything that hasnt been done before but hey, thats what innovation is all about, something no1 has ever thought of before. However the magic element of Shadowrun and Bioshock is a thought less traveled. Im sure the idea has been tried in other games but those are the first 2 that come to my mind that have executed the idea well, especially bioshock. Its not just gameplay but setting and storyline that make games standout, i.e. bioshock again

Everyone copies real world weapons. Pistols, Rocket launchers, Sniper rifles, and the lot are all quite popular, which is why they are still being put into games. But as far as futuristic/fantasy/sci-fi weapons, there is truly no limit to what can be created. We are no longer limited by 2d sprites, physics, or 16mb system memory. Doom had the BFG. Quake had the Shaft. Quake 2 had the railgun. Quake 3 had... well, the first bots that were fun to play against, so it didn't need a new gun. Quake 4 had thw Dark Matter gun. Unreal Tournament had... well, every one of their guns is unique. Timesplitters had bricks and fire extinguishers and head-exploding poison (among other things).

Wait, wasn't that shield grenade in a much much earlier E3 preview? Just checking :) Oh and "Shield-like Healthbar that slowly recharges" has been copied by just about every FPS imaginable - Including Resistance. All the games follow the same fundamentals, I'm not going to accuse Halo 3 of being a ripoff just yet thanks.

The dual health/shield was what made Halo 1 fun. Halo 2 diminished it, and it sucked. Halo 3 keeps the fragmented remains of uniqueness from the XBox's one Killer App, and slathers it with dried up crap they took from iD and Insomniac.

Pure BS, all those were used before the games you mentioned. Plus a lot of them were first in halo and then in other games... so gtfo

Team Fortress inspired many styles of modern team combat modes. Half-Life 1 REVIVED the First-Person Shooter genre. Half-Life 2 is the standard for which all FPS's are judged. Ratchet & Clank UYA has the most diverse range of weapons out of any game with guns (Not counting Coded Arms, which is a pile of sh*t).

Past the grenades, this YTMND is worthless.

Is there really any way to innovate FPS games when they've been out so long? Surely any idea you come up with has been used by some obscure game (see Ratchet and Clank reference in the YTMND), so they might as well stick with the tried and true guns.

Prey allowed you to flip the gravity in a room and walk on the walls. It's quite an experience and there's still nothing quite like it. Portal will give you a modified version of HL2's Gravity Gun that shoots "in" and "out" portals. It's going to be incredible.

Wow, so you are saying that the bungie team specifically went back to TEAM FORTRESS CLASSIC and said "Oh man A MINIGUN would be awesome to have in halo 3!" Also, how much do you think games have copied from MARATHON? That was made by bungie, just after the release of DOOM. Get your facts straight man. I own an Xbox360, I don't own (and never will, f*ck sony) a PS3. After playing both Halo 2 and more recently Prey, I can tell the difference between an original, innovative game, and one that lacks creativity. From what you've shown us, the Halo series has become the latter.
