The same way any other syndicated comic stays in print, like the abhorrent Rex Morgan MD - you sold your strip to papers at one point, which generates income, so you can afford to keep making comics and selling them to papers. And because no readers actively complain, they stick around. If Marmaduke went away, no one would miss it.

We don't want Calvin and Hobbes to come back. It was magnificent in its time, and so it shall remain. Always let the artist choose when to end a project - they'll come back to it if they feel it's warranted, but if somebody gets burnt out on a project.... well, just imagine how hollow it would feel if you woke up one morning and realized that Calvin and Hobbes had turned into Garfield.

Marmaduke may not appeal to yours or my sense of humor, but it's better than half the garbage that claims space on the comics page of the average daily newspaper. Having been around for decades, its a comics page institution. A hell of a lot better than Get Fuzzy, that's for damn sure.

Make a compliation of all the comics that suck (i.e. Garfield, post-60's Peanuts, Adam@home, Family Circus, Pluggers [the one with the f*ckn dogs, usually with the caption "a Plugger____"], Cathy, Sally Forth, and any of the over-styled "adventure" strips) and you will win many internets. In my humble opinion, I think that we shouldn't have all national strips, most of them should be from local artists from around the paper's area so that they could trim the crap that has invaded the Comics!
