What was it about? The tensions in the Middle East, of course. The cartoons were more an excuse to riot, the pushing factor, but not the main cause. Had a far, far stronger Islamic country invaded Canada and Mexico with some semi-reasonable grounds and no intervention from the UN, you could still be sure to find some extremist Christian groups, and more than a few riots.
