I just want to point out it's not really world "negative one." Look at the way it normally is; for example, world 2-1. After going through the tunnel, the first number disappears, leaving the appearance of -1, although it's really more like "world null dash one."

Oh just to add, it's not "negative" at all... It's just that the world you entered hasn't got a number like World 1 Level 1 would be 1-1... This is -1, plus the fact it loops would just make it a test level for the water stages, even though not used it wasn't removed so when the game enconters and error because you didn't go the normal route, it drops you into this -1 world.

You can easily do that by holding reset while turning it on

just thought id explain why this happens for people who think this isnt a flaw... there are four exits to world 1-2 one on the right side of the screen and three on the bottom. when you go down a pipe thats not lined up with one of the exits the game doesnt know where to take you. it defaults the world to a blank tile in the game so it looks like "world -1"

It's not a programming flaw, it's an easter egg, or a secret area, or something, but I'm pretty sure it's intentional.

Take it from a Rom Hacker, the game tries to register you as going into level 36-1, but tile 36 is blank so it comes up as -1. The level is really 7-2. Dont fight with me, it's the truth.

I was a programming error, not intentional. The reason you slide through is because the game thinks you hit the block but you really didn't, so it makes you not solid for a second and allows you to clip into the wall.

And as we all know, when you clip into a wall in SMB, you slide out to the other side. When you jump into the pipe before it registers it as 4-1 destination, it loads 7-2 with no pointers, and names it world 36-1.

If you're gonna make a YTMND for nostalgia value, you need to design it in a way that feels nostalgic (ie not making an epic themed YTMND.)

To Peanut:IT IS A FLAW! Normally you're supposed to go above the wall at an earlier point and go ver the exit pipe to reach a Warp Zone, if you reach the other side without doing that you will enter the Minus World.

Wish I had my NES to try this out... Gave it away in '98 :(
