I wouldn't go so far as to say that D-Day wasn't needed, but it's clear that Russia bore the brunt of the Nazi assault. According to wikipedia, Russia suffered 10 million military casualties (and another 11 million civilians); America suffered 400,000, UK 382,000. Bottom line is, we let Russia duke it out with the Nazis in hopes that they would weaken each other, then once victory was assured, landed at D-Day to ensure American

hegemony over Western Europe. Frankly, it's not surprising to me that the Russians hated us so much after WWII; we left them to the dogs and moved only when it was clear that we could gain territorial advantage.

Not to mention the fact that the Germans screwed themselves over by over extending their supply lines and failing to properly equip most troops fighting on the Eastern Front.

Russia, Britain, and France were all very vital in gaining victory in Europe, the absence of any one of them could mean we'd all be speaking German right now.
