The reason most people never beat Carnival Night zone was the locked barrel room in act 2. You have to press up/down to get it to move out of the way, most people tried to jump it. Incidentally the year Sonic 3 was released Sega made a lot of money from people ringin their help line about that problem. Oh, 5.
