According to the new "String Theories" and "M Theory" there are 11 dimensions total, but we only know of 4 so the rest are a mystery. According to string theory, the universe has many more spacial dimensions than just 3, they're just so small that you can't perceive them, like how if you look at very thin piece of string it looks 1 dimensional even though it's 3 dimensional like everything else. But then again String Theory has never been proven in any experiments so you're right for whats proven for the time being.
