In case you don't know to go through, press down while the cylinder goes down and match it's up and down movement, or use a bubble shield.

I was stuck on that part as a kid too. It's pretty bad when the hardest part of the game is in fact the easiest part of the game. How did they expect people to figure that out?

When i was 10, i beat the game without a problem, and i understood the trick to that level. But when i turned 19, i realized one thing. why the f*ck was the rotating thingy need to be timed with your jumping and tail's jumping as well? god f*ck you.

The problem wasn't the level, but the struggle. My index fingers gave out at the boss thanks to those barrels, every time I replayed the game was a painful night. And DAMN HOW MANY TIMES I REPLAYED IT! XD

However i could get past the barrel in no time, i just hate everything that can crush Sonic. Argh.

It took me a month, i asked a video game nerd friend of mine, and i mean a TOTAL nerd, he had EVERYTHING, Jaguar, Neo Geo, you name it, he had it... so yeah. this was a painful but yet hillarious memory of mine when i was 9 years old XD *got this game on my 9th birthday on March 2nd* and for your info, i am 21 years old now.

And to the brainless few who try to impress everyone on the internet by saying "How could anyone get stuck on that, duh it's SO OBVIOUS": there's a point in the stage where you can't go forward or backwards unless you've already found that you can move the platforms up and down. Since you can't see above or below the screen, you can't see there are reachable platforms above or below, thus it's NOT "obvious".

So, knowing that it goes down, the logical conclusion would be, I don't know, pressing down? Maybe just trying it? A Genesis controller doesn't have many buttons, you'd think you'd try one of the two that gets you past this thing. All the people complaining about Tails jumping on it, you know you can turn Tails off in the options menu right? >___>

I did the same thing. Funniest part: My first Sonic 3 cartridge got stolen and it took me forever to replace it. But over that period of time (and to this day), I owned the Sonic 3 walkthrough book, with only one page having been read. :P
