I think they booted Jeeves because AskJeeves just had a horrible reputation before. They improved the search engine to be more Google-esque and wanted to drop their old rep.

But they're stuck. Even if they make a site EQUAL to Google, Google has the name recognition that Ask doesn't anymore - because of the lost of Jeeves.
