(This is going to take a while. It's kind of involved.) The best sites to me aren't the ones where the source material is the joke itself...

Rather, it's abstract. It floats it in the aether. It's the relationship of all the materials together that makes the joke...

Example: Your Paris Hilton one. Let's ignore the "old news" factor. Your gag was totally tied up into the image. When that site jacked your work, they could have just stolen the gif and probably done just as well. The sound is more there out of the obliga

...obligation to have a sound. To put some polish on the joke. Now let's move to Fezzik...

I'd have laughed just as much without your Saved by the Bell-esque dream sequence/love scene border. What's that say? ...

It says to me that even though I've seen all of those clips so many times, it took the music to give it the proper context.

Neither is funny on their own. Both are funny together. And to me, that's what separates a true (and good) YTMND from the "funny pics and videos" sites so many users would let it become.

It's one of the reasons I still love the oldschool format. The interplay between each element is more involved when there's text, too.

But now and then, there are the occasional more video-esque sites that still put the joke up in the aether, and I like those.

It's just easier (and more likely) for video clips to tie the entire joke into the image and (worse still) to make it a linear sequence of events.

The script for The Princess Bride is a true masterpiece. Seriously, just look it up online and read it. This ytmnd rocks. Could lighten up on the dreamy purple fog a tad, but otherwise perfect.
