Very clever. It's an optical illusion, of course, but still clever.

The diagonals of the blue shape and the green shape (and likewise of the red and the orange) in the 5 x 13 figure look like they match up, but they actually don't. There's a narrow gap between them, too narrow to see easily, but when it's added up over

2005-11-28 18:06:13

No, Manhung is right. Here's how it happens. When the pieces break off, the edge where it was broken gets thicker. But when the pieces are put back together they're put back with these larger pieces. This extra space, added up among all the lines, accou

i don't think the slopes are the same though =X
2005-11-28 18:23:14

There is an area equal to one whole block missing smack dab in the middle of the diagonal "line." It is especially clear when they show the two blocks next to eachother.

enough of these chinese mind tricks! lol nice ytmnd. very clever

you have unraveled the fabrics of the space time continuum
2005-11-28 18:37:18

The slope of the lines are 3/8 and 2/5 so they don't line up perfectly, leaving a thin gap which is hidden by the outlines.
2005-11-28 18:37:42

had i not just figured it out after 30 minutes of cutting and fitting paper, i would've taken it to my algebra 2 teacher and looked really stupid. 4'd for *ssholery
2005-11-28 18:38:52

What song is that, that is playing in the background? I really like it.
2005-11-28 18:42:59

Yeah. If you look at the long diagonal on the rectangle, notice how the line is thicker in the middle and thin on the ends. It took me three minutes of staring to figure it out.

its an optical illusion. Check your rises over runs and you'll find that one of the lines is not a line at all and is not straight. Though it was very clever :)
2005-11-28 20:23:17

Yeah, things don't quite line up, I tried with graph paper.

Bah, not this optical illusion again. The two 5x8 "triangles" which make up the 5x8 rectangle are not in fact triangles. If you were to view a high resolution image of the two triangles you would see that they are actually quadrilaterals and not trian

2005-11-29 17:04:43

Notice: The slope of blue/orange is 2/5, while red/green is 3/8. While they are very close, they could vener fit, due to the fact that they are different slopes

2005-11-29 21:48:30

Doesn't work though, the slope on 2 of the triangles is 3/8 and on the others it's 2/5, that's not the same. YOU LOSE.
2005-11-30 01:06:01

OH HOT sh*t. You used the loop from the 9/11 flash! Your 3 is now officially a 5. Yes. Inkdrinker gives 5s sometimes.

2005-11-30 18:59:45

Those are triangles. They're quadrilaterals. If you look REALLY closely, you can see that the triangles are either convex or concave slightly. It's an illusion. 1 for wasted effort.
2005-11-30 19:00:48

Those aren't triangles*

2005-12-06 12:20:36

I liked it, showed my math professor, he says it's called a "Fudge" factor. Someone mentioned how the edges are stretched already. Lousy optical illusions.
2005-12-08 00:48:07

Different dimentions. 8x8 as a whole square grid would produce 64. It's different when you separate them into pieces, since you get different results, depending on the way you cut the grid into pieces. More like logic, if you think about it. ;)
2005-12-09 04:47:47

NO! THERE ARE FOUR LIGHTS!!!
2005-12-09 16:59:31

2005-12-11 18:32:13

Also, GCNMario must have failed math class.
2006-01-20 20:59:58

5 because it hurts my brain.
2006-01-28 11:26:12

I understand what the deal is. You create a small parallelogram with an area of 1. So 8*8=5*13-1.
2006-02-05 02:08:50

thats pretty trippy.
2006-02-20 16:55:24

Wow, just Wow
2006-02-21 11:58:32

This is better than Finding X.
2006-05-03 18:20:04

wtf?
2006-05-03 23:36:34

It's pretty easy to spot the error, even by visual inspection. 3/8 != 2/5, so the slopes don't match up exactly.
2006-05-05 10:18:45

The joining angle of going across the oblong is not an exact fit. In fact, the gap it leaves is exactly 1 square.
2006-05-05 20:48:15

amazing
2006-05-07 15:05:25

would get a 5 if it said something about how it doesn't work. There are also way better false proofs out there.

Oh long johnson ... also cocks

2006-06-24 20:05:23

that was awsome, why did you spend time finding this out?
2006-06-25 13:48:36

Nothing special. Area of shapes after shifting location doesn't prove anything.
2006-07-01 17:31:38

Now I'm confused... lol.
2006-07-11 01:58:39

your stupid
2006-07-18 13:03:08

Awesome find, I give it five stars, but unfortuantely, there is an explanation. *sigh* Anyway, the slope of the diagonal line of the triangle and the diagonal line of the trapezoid aren't the same, they are slightly off. When you put the two triangles and trapezoids back together for the rectangle, the diagonal line is in fact not a line at all, but a paralellogram with an area of 1. I'm surprised no one explained this yet.
2006-07-18 20:22:38

ahhh mind f*ck!
2006-07-19 02:02:33

gay, also not true
2006-07-22 11:59:17

The fractional difference in slopes along the diagonal in the new rectangle add up to exactly 1.
2006-08-03 20:24:55

Ahhh crazy!
2006-08-06 21:05:11

its not true, do it yourself and the peices don't match up correctly. nt though

You made me stare blankly at the screen after this ytmnd. Good j0rb.
2006-09-12 15:30:31

Not really that good... Its like saying 02 has 2 oxygen atoms, then ya re-arange the protons and electrons and 'omg wow :O its changed!' -.-
2006-09-18 08:01:34

the rectangle isn't really a rectangle. There is 1 square's worth of empty space along the "diagnal" which isn't even perfectly diagnal.
2006-10-02 06:35:28

Well after all 0.999 repeating is 1 :)
2006-12-30 16:12:13

Lines don't fit perfectly, all these f*cking gook math sites have either lines not fitting perfectly or lines not perfectly straight.

You fail. http://mathrules.ytmnd.com/ ftw!
2007-01-22 23:59:59

Math still rules supreme. 5 for making the math major think!
2007-02-05 01:43:02

You bring up an interesting point, and in response I say that.....
2007-02-12 20:29:00

Im sorry but the angle of the hypontunses doesnt line up its just slightly off... FAIL!!!
2007-03-04 07:17:20

Awesome, took me a while to figure it out too.
2007-03-26 21:39:07

For a second I thought that was true. Oh well, we can't all win.
2007-06-22 02:34:05

A very old math trick, but I like seeing it animated like that. BTW, the hypotenuses of each main triangle are bent outwards slightly (mathematically and barely visually).
2008-09-19 14:53:30

saw this come up in YTMND Spy
2008-09-26 22:21:17

5 for the Fight Club music
