mo money mo problems

if you haven't seen my latest ytmnd yet, check it out.

What I'm trying to say is YTMND isn't doing so hot, traffic and press is better than ever, but ad revenue just isn't keeping up with the costs of running such a high traffic site.

what this means is i'm going to need to stop focusing on new features as much and start focusing on making YTMND more profitable again. read more for further info (including shirt info!).

You are going to start to notice more ads on YTMND. I've always tried to keep them as out of the way as possible and as few to a page as possible, but YTMND just can't afford to do that any longer.

I've added pop ups to all sub domains for non-logged in users as a temporary solution. The front page is probably going to have a few ads added on to it in various places.

I'm currently waiting on a few more shirt designs and I'm going to post them later this week and let you guys decide which ones get printed. There are still around 20 XXXL of the old shirts so if you want one of the original shirts and are a hefty dude go here.

I also have someone doing some designs for a sticker, which is probably going to be screen printed on vinyl and I'll sell them in packs of 10 or 20 or something.

If you have any good ideas for shirts or hoodies etc, feel free to mail me a design at max@ytmnd.com and we can discuss it.

I am going to be sending out a demographics survey to all registered users via private message later today. Filling it out would be extremely helpful as I know almost nothing about most of you and can't really give advertisers a good idea of who you are! Better ads = more money = less ads = better ytmnd.

Last but not least, I signed a release for the Colbert Report to show some YTMNDs on there, so hopefully they should air sometime this week (if at all).

P.S.: if you run ad/popup blockers and are capable of/willing to disable them when using ytmnd.com, it might be helpful.

PLEASE DO NOT RANDOMLY CLICK ADS, THIS DOES NOT HELP

Click ads when you see relevant information about products you may wish to purchase. Ad clicks are worthless without people actually buying products.

A temple is a structure reserved for religious or spiritual activities, such as prayer and sacrifice, or analogous rites (as in masonry). It is a general term for a house of worship. The majority of the main temples, along the major religions, are aligned in the cardinal directions, especially in an east-west axis which symbolically represents the sun's path, the "donor of life". --- THE MORE YOU KNOW!

t-shirts and hoodies ftw! how about a paid membership option for an ad-free viewing experience? not that they really bother me, it's just that in all my years on the internets i have yet to buy anything from an advertisement on a website, there aren't very many that i click on for that matter.

PTKFGS shirt would definitely sell. however I dont think a GAYTMND shirt would do all that well. A MichaelWolfson t shirt would do better even.
2006-08-22 17:51:08 128th

I would like a shirt that said "also clocks" with a picture of a clock and "ytmnd.com" on the back. Then also the "c*cks" alt for the nsfw. Also maybe one with the BK king and "Where's your god now?" And of course upvoter and downvoter shirts with five and one stars on them.

I'd rather pay for ytmnd than have more ads and popups. whos with me?
2006-08-22 18:32:44 165th

Maybe you could save money by having a listed database of commonly used songs and sound files. people can enter in the file name in the YTMND - O - MATIC when making their sites, so then every site made this way will call up that file. This way you only need to store one copy instead of 2,000 copies of the same song. That will cut down on server space.
2006-08-22 18:33:10 166th

dam run some ad's for photoshop or fireworks, so people can buy the software online and make better YTMND's also 757893th
2006-08-22 18:35:05 167th

New rule: anyone who calls the number of their post pays the server cost for that month.

For T-shirts all I want is a black one with a big YTMND star logo on front center. Maybe a happycat shirt too.
2006-08-22 18:45:06 177th

I hope Colbert Report runs some star wars stephen YTMND's soon.
2006-08-22 18:45:45 178th

I'd buy a NEDM T-shirt.
2006-08-22 18:47:29 179th

I do however think that one time paid accounts would probably cover the remaining losses for a few months at least.
2006-08-22 18:49:32 180th

I'm sure this had been said before but anyways a shirt with a downvoter/upvoter logo with 1 or 5 stars would be nice.

I could see a line of shirts. Like "This shirt doesn't change facial expressions." "POKEYMON!?". A pink shirt with "You're my cuppycake gumdrops." other crap like that.
2006-08-22 18:59:16 185th

Here's a thought- an "I don't get it" shirt. I saw a YTMND touting a design for such a shirt, though I forget where.
2006-08-22 19:01:33 186th

Instead of a "sponsor your site" section, what about banner ad area specifically for YTMND sites, sort of like what they've done on the SA forums? People pay $10 to get their banner in the rotation to promote their site for an entire month.
2006-08-22 19:03:08 187th

leet-shoe I want a shirt that says "I bought this shirt to keep ads off ytmnd" NOW!!
2006-08-22 19:04:24 188th

I have an aversion to PayPal. Can I send a Check to support YTMND?
2006-08-22 19:08:30 191st

Your lack of ad revenue could well be to do with the prevalence of adblockers and popup blockers. I for one have unblocked google ads for this site, but it'll be a cold day in hell when I turn off my popup blocker. Popups suck donkey balls, just get the merchandise out there - don't stop at t-shirts, we want the coffee mugs, the paperweights, the ashtrays, the action figure... While you're at it, ads for music sites where tracks on your albums can be found would be good revenue if you can convert.
2006-08-22 19:10:16 192nd

I would KILL for action figures. KILL.
2006-08-22 19:12:48 193rd

2006-08-22 19:16:40 194th

You are an incredibly sensitive man, who inspires Joy-Joy feelings in all those around you. max, I will do all I can to help. The YTMND sticker idea is nice. I'd fill buses full of em. Also, buying a shirt to help you wouldn't hurt. I never ever sponsored a site yet. I'm afraid of Paypal. :(
2006-08-22 19:18:49 195th

huzzah!
2006-08-22 19:20:00 196th

Are you meaning to tell me that people ACTUALLY buy sh*t from ads? WTF, really?
2006-08-22 19:24:33 199th

I said it yesterday, too. Convert audio that's huge. I did a quick test and found a 1.9MB WAV file that was easily converted down to 230k or so. That would significantly cut down the amount of bandwidth you used on huge files.
2006-08-22 19:24:48 200th

2006-08-22 19:24:56 201st

Give people who have sponsored a site a status symbol like a different color username in comments Delete all current sites with a rating under 2 stars Term limit on poorly performing YTMNDS As mentioned before, some kind of sound/music depository to prevent duplicates Contests for merchandise designs (I still want the original shirt) $13.37/year subscription ...some ideas
2006-08-22 19:25:03 202nd

Wow. i had no idea this place took that much money to run. also, c*cks.
2006-08-22 19:29:55 203rd

Ya max, you need to work on cutting down bandwidth by improving the preloader so that MP3's work properly at any bitrate, and making it so ONLY mp3's can be uploaded. Also limit images that can be uploaded, so there are less retards trying to upload bmp's for example.
2006-08-22 19:30:30 204th

Does most of this bandwidth use come from the images? I'll be converting my PNGs to JPGs and reducing some of the big JPGs I have just in case. Also mp3s.
2006-08-22 20:13:48 235th

A T-Shirt with a picture of Eric Bauman, the LiveJasmin Admin, L. Ron Hubbard, and Lee Kaplan on the front, and the words "Bring it on" on the back.
